Undergraduate and graduate level teaching on biotechnology entrepreneurship
Between 2003 and 2017 I taught on two UK University degrees focussed on biotechnology entrepreneurship, and give occasional talks elsewhere. My teaching focusses on those earliest stages of forming a biotech company - from sitting round a table with a blank sheet of paper with some friends through defining the ideas, the technology, the business and, most importantly, where to get the cash.
A big part of this is whether you need investment, how much, where to get it from, how to pitch for it, and what the consequences will be. I do not have a very rosy view of investment-based businesses, especially VC-backed ones, even though I have started several. But sometimes you have no choice. (See this section of my website for more on the topic of VC.)
As well as the specific postgraduate degree courses below, I give occasional talks to all sorts of (young) audiences on entrepreneurship in science and business. Drop me an e-mail if you think 40 minutes on how to start a biotech company, and some real-life examples of how it can fail horribly, is right for your audience.
University of Cambridge's Masters in Bioscience Enterprise. A postgraduate programme focussing on how to apply new life sciences to generate new business, especially in healthcare.
University of Warwick's MSc in Biotechnology, Bioprocessing and Business Management. A graduate degree focussing on building and managing new business opportunities in the life sciences, especially outside the traditional 'drugs' areas of biotech.
